At GITEX Technology Week, Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority launched the first ‘Autonomous taxi’ in the region.
Currently at display on the #GITEX2018 stand S2C1 at Sheikh Saeed Hall in the Dubai World Trade Centre, this self driving taxi is a part of Dubai Government’s Strategy to convert over 25% of total journeys in Dubai into autonomous transit by the year 2030.
RTA’s self driving taxi cars are modified Mercedes-Benz sedans with cameras, sensors, and in-built LiDAR systems. The vehicle designing has been done in conjunction with the Dubai Silicon Oasis and DG World (Digirobotics).
Featuring high safety and security standards, the car can remotely scan its surroundings, such as light signals and all four sides of the track using a GPS system. It can also monitor any object that may potentially trigger a collision.
The driverless car service will run for the next three months in select parts of the city (Dubai Silicon Oasis), driving up to speeds of 35 Kph fitting in up to 4 passengers. If required a Safety driving at the front seat can take control of the vehicle.
In its initial phase, the self driving taxi will connect passengers between existing transportation systems.
