Every year thousands of cars are taken off the road when Dubai Municipality observes a Car Free day in Dubai. In 2018 the initiative was expanded to include Ajman, Al Ain and Sharjah. February 24 is UAE Car Free Day and Dubai Municipality is encouraging residents and tourists to use public transport. The authorities are also hoping drivers will decide to help protect the environment for more than just one day and look to include environmentally sustainable options like bicycles and public transport. Motorists are being urged to leave their cars at home for a day and find a more eco-friendly way of getting to work next Sunday. In addition to helping the environment, participants can also ease traffic congestion which helps save valuable time. Its important to note that Dubai was found to be the 79th most congested city out of 220 surveyed in the Global Traffic Scorecard by international transport consultancy Inrix, with Dubai and AbuDhabi motorists losing hundreds of valuable hours to traffic jams.
