At the 2025 Tokyo Auto Salon, Nissan and Nissan Motorsports & Customizing unveiled the all-electric R32 EV, a groundbreaking project that revitalizes one of the most iconic vehicles in automotive history.
This innovative conversion seamlessly blends the timeless appeal of the R32 GT-R with cutting-edge electric vehicle technology, underscoring Nissan’s dedication to advancing both performance and sustainability.
Leading the project is Ryozo Hiraku, a seasoned Nissan EV powertrain engineer and a longtime fan of the R32 GT-R. As a former R32 Skyline owner, Hiraku was motivated by a desire to electrify a car he admired and ensure it remains a driving legend for generations to come.
At first glance, the R32 EV could almost pass as a standard R32 GT-R. Finished in Gun Grey metallic, the vehicle’s factory-fresh appearance disguises the electric powertrain beneath it.
A 62kWh battery from the LEAF NISMO RC02 replaces the rear seat. Despite adding around 370 kg due to the battery and electrical components, the team has tuned the EV to match the original GT-R’s torque-to-weight ratio.
The car also features a NISMO Sports suspension kit with Öhlins dampers to ensure handling remains optimal. Development is ongoing to achieve the same performance as the original R32 GT-R, which had 280 PS and 353 Nm of torque.
The R32 EV team focused on creating a sensory-rich experience that echoes the original R32 GT-R. It features paddle shift functionality with a sound system that replicates the RB26DETT engine note. To mimic the feel of manual gear shifts, the team programmed a “shift shock” sensation.
The vehicle is equipped with larger brakes and monoblock calipers from the R35 GT-R for enhanced stopping power, paired with 18-inch wheels that resemble the original 16-inch alloys.
Inside, the cabin is upgraded with custom Recaro seats and high-resolution digital screens for audio, gauges, and cluster, maintaining the classic R32 look while modernizing the technology.
